These Latter Days

about

In LA we've had a lot of smoke from fires lately - spreading like an apocalyptic pall down across the city. It was during the worst of the "fire season" last Fall that I started to put these words together - some just jotted down in a journal, others on my phone. At the same time I found a chord pattern that interested me and I tried to put them together; it took a while, but things finally worked. We do live in troubled times - American democracy is a fragile thing being tested in ways "the Founders could not conceive" - and there is a sense of Biblical End Times, too. But there's hope as well. Never stop hoping and praying for better times.

These Latter Days ©2018 KL Dennis

There’s no sorrow I can buy myself out of
No big car that can give me love
Don’t need a mansion to feel some joy
Don’t need Fox News to fool this boy
I’m looking for kindness in your eyes
I’m looking for some return, is that a surprise?
I’m looking for work that pays/ I’m looking for the path of faith
In these latter days

Don’t need a tyrant or the master race
People around me are acting so strange
Don’t need an idol, just want to see your face
We need to strengthen what remains
Love cannot negotiate with men’s unbounded rage
The church is impatient with God’s ways and turn to the Spirit of the Age
I see the mountains all ablaze/ and I’m looking for my escape
In these latter days

Too much indecent exposure
Not a lot of final closure
Everyone’s a little insecure
But there’s one thing I know for sure
We’ve all got skin in the game
In these latter days

One day gonna be so bad we can’t shrug it off
Being made President does not mean being above the law
One day gonna be a lie so big nobody will believe
The nation’s being tested in ways the Founders could not conceive
Are you sweeping dirt or covering up your tracks?
Are you learning to survive or refusing to react?
I’m looking for reality/ I’m looking for what that means to me
In these latter days

Bridge
I can’t always be beautiful
But I can try to be true
I can’t always be perfect
But I can hold you when you need me to

Gonna need God’s help if I’m to go this distance
Gonna need the prayers of my brothers and my sisters
You know being strong doesn’t mean you're not broken
You know being weak doesn’t mean you stand alone
Doesn’t matter if they think that I’m a fool
Don’t even care if I ruin my new shoes
I just want to run the race/I just want to sing and praise
In these latter days

Too much indecent exposure
Not a lot of final closure
Everyone’s a little insecure
But there’s one thing I know for sure
We’ve all got skin in the game
In these latter days

about

K L Dennis Los Angeles, California

I'm a rebel against the way things are going. I'm a Christian who didn't vote the same way as many of my brothers and sisters. I write songs about things that matter to a man who wakes up in an increasingly strange world, and then turns that into songs. I started with five chords and the truth; now I have a few more chords. Still going for truth. ... more
