True South

about

Inspired by my friendship with a remarkable family, the Hills, who are based in Birmingham, Alabama - but also LIberia and Los Angeles and the World. Some of the sisters were upset with my song "Southern Radio" (now called "Old Man Radio") and insisted that I say something good about the South - so "True South" was born. I have a long and complicated history with the South - good and bad, but in these times of trouble, it always pays to lift up the good. One of the Hills, Shaaz, helped form the song, and is being heard on this recording, maybe for the first time, I'm glad to say.

lyrics

True South ©2018 KL Dennis

There’s a small choir singing big in a Southern congregation
They’ve overcome the curses of many generations
They’ve risen from the ashes of the fires
They’ve found the way to truth through the testaments of liars
They know they walk in the blessings of Abraham
In the heart of Birmingham

I’m talking about…
I’m talking about…
True South
I’m out here looking to find out
True South
There’s a bright sun shining behind those clouds
True South x2

There’s someone praying hard in the heart of Georgia
Believing that the circle is still unbroken
They overcome the past in the towns of Mississippi
They hold on to the hope in spite of history
They keep their eyes on what the marchers saw
On the highway out of Selma

Someone raise a song for my brothers and my sisters
Someone raise a song as you gather by the river
Someone raise a song for we saints and we sinners
And for the ones who dare to say they belong upon this earth

We’ve got Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes and Harper Lee
The tortured souls of a man called Tennessee
Bluegrass in the valleys where so many soldiers fell
Rosetta sings about Heaven, and Billie sings about Hell
Genius did not ever mind
The Mason Dixon line

I’m talking about…
I’m talking about…
True South
I’m out here looking to find out
True South
There’s a sweet song rising over angry shouts
True South x3

about

K L Dennis Los Angeles, California

I'm a rebel against the way things are going. I'm a Christian who didn't vote the same way as many of my brothers and sisters. I write songs about things that matter to a man who wakes up in an increasingly strange world, and then turns that into songs. I started with five chords and the truth; now I have a few more chords. Still going for truth. ... more
